A New Architecture for a New Era
The architecture of the Work IQ APIs is divided into four primary domains that mirror the workflow of an autonomous agent: Agents, Organizational Intelligence, Chat and Context, and Tools. This structure allows for a modular approach to building AI, where developers can tap into specific capabilities—like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) or REST APIs—depending on the needs of the specific agent.
To facilitate early adoption, Microsoft has already made these domains available for exploration through a public preview on GitHub. This allows developers to begin prototyping and testing their agents well ahead of the June 16 general availability date.

Economic Model and Cost Management
Recognizing that the shift to agentic software requires a predictable economic model, Microsoft is introducing usage-based pricing for the Work IQ APIs. The pricing structure consists of a fixed component for the use of "Tools" and a variable component for "Chat" and "Context." All costs are denominated in Copilot Credits, a unified currency for Microsoft’s AI services.
To help organizations manage these costs, Microsoft is also launching a new cost management dashboard within the Microsoft 365 admin center. This tool will provide IT administrators with granular control over AI spending. Features include the ability to:
- Review real-time AI credit usage across the organization.
- Configure billing between prepaid and pay-as-you-go models.
- Set specific spending limits for tenants, individual groups, or specific users.
- Monitor and approve credit requests from users within the organization.
While Work IQ APIs will be the first product managed through this new dashboard, Microsoft plans to eventually integrate other services, including Microsoft Copilot Studio, into the same credit-based management experience.

Building on the Foundation of Copilot
The release of the Work IQ APIs represents a democratization of the technology that powers Microsoft’s own Copilot. By opening up this intelligence layer, Microsoft is giving external developers and IT administrators the same tools used by its internal teams to create sophisticated, context-aware AI.
As the June 16, 2026, general availability date approaches, the focus moves to the developer community. With the public preview now live on GitHub, the industry will soon see how organizations leverage this new intelligence layer to redefine productivity and automate the complex, multi-layered tasks that define the modern workplace.
