This is the gap that Overe intends to fill. By offering a platform specifically designed to secure Microsoft 365 and various SaaS tools—which have become the backbone of modern small business operations—Overe aims to provide enterprise-level protection without the enterprise-level complexity. The addition of Simon Reed to the advisory team is intended to refine this approach, ensuring that the product remains aligned with the highest standards of the industry while remaining functional for the end-user.
Reed’s background makes him a uniquely qualified voice in this endeavor. An industry veteran who began his career in software engineering, Reed transitioned into cybersecurity in 2001. Over the following two decades, he held senior roles at some of the world’s most prominent security vendors, including McAfee and Sophos. This experience on the vendor side has given him a comprehensive understanding of how security products are built, marketed, and deployed. Barnes noted that this "unique insight" is exactly what Overe needs to navigate the complexities of the current market.
A challenging environment
The timing of Reed’s appointment coincides with what many experts describe as a "sea change" in the cybersecurity world. Speaking to ITPro, Reed reflected on the shifting dynamics of the industry, noting that the days of "install and forget" security are long gone. In previous eras, a business could install an antivirus product, rely on it to update itself, and feel reasonably confident in its protection. Today, that model is obsolete.
According to Reed, modern cybersecurity requires a continuous partnership between high-quality products and human expertise. This is particularly true for smaller companies that do not have the budget for a dedicated Chief Information Security Officer or an internal Security Operations Center (SOC). For these businesses, the MSP is the cybersecurity expert. Therefore, the strength of the partnership between the security vendor and the MSP is the most crucial link in the chain of defense.
Reed’s decision to join Overe was driven by this specific realization. He observed that the current environment is placing immense pressure on both MSPs and their clients. This pressure is exacerbated by two major factors: the rising volume of cybersecurity threats and the rapid emergence of generative AI. These technologies are being leveraged by bad actors to automate attacks, create more convincing phishing campaigns, and discover vulnerabilities at an unprecedented pace.
In response to these threats, Reed argues that the industry must move beyond a purely defensive mindset. While building strong defenses remains important, it is no longer adequate on its own. Instead, the focus must shift toward "cyber resilience." This concept of resilience was a primary factor in drawing Reed to Overe.
The Shift Toward Resilience
For Reed, resilience is about more than just blocking an attack; it is about the overall health and configuration of a digital estate. He explained that a resilience-focused strategy involves asking critical questions: Is the estate properly configured? Are the available tools set up correctly? Is there actual coverage in the places where the business assumes it has coverage?
