Twente Region Set to Secure Dedicated Digital Identity with Application for .Twente Top-Level Domain

The digital landscape of the Netherlands is poised for a significant expansion as the Twente region, situated in the eastern part of the country, moves toward establishing its own unique presence on the global internet. Dotlocal, a specialized registry operator, has officially announced its submission of an application for the .twente top-level domain (TLD) as part of the latest expansion round facilitated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This move marks a pivotal moment for the regional identity of Twente, which seeks to join the ranks of other Dutch locales that have successfully carved out their own digital territories.

The Twente region is home to a population of more than 600,000 residents, spanning across a collection of municipalities known for their strong industrial heritage, technological innovation, and deep-seated cultural pride. By seeking a dedicated TLD, the region aims to provide local businesses, organizations, and individuals with a distinctive online identifier that highlights their geographic and cultural roots. The application for .twente represents more than just a technical registration; it is a strategic effort to bolster the region’s brand in an increasingly crowded digital marketplace.

Dotlocal’s decision to pursue the .twente extension is backed by a wealth of experience in managing geographic domains within the Netherlands. The company is already a prominent player in the industry, having successfully navigated the complexities of previous TLD expansion rounds. Most notably, Dotlocal was the driving force behind the application for .amsterdam during ICANN’s last major expansion phase. Since its launch, the .amsterdam namespace has grown to accommodate approximately 18,000 registrations, serving as a digital home for the capital city’s diverse array of businesses, tourism initiatives, and local government services.

The success of .amsterdam provided a blueprint for how localized domains can function as both a branding tool and a community asset. However, the Dutch regional domain market is not limited to major metropolitan centers. Dotlocal also took a significant step in expanding its portfolio when it intervened to save the .frl domain, which represents the province of Friesland. Originally managed by the provincial government, the .frl domain faced an uncertain future when the local authorities decided to cease their involvement in the project. Recognizing the value of the extension to the Frisian community, Dotlocal stepped in to take over the registry operations. Today, .frl maintains a steady presence with roughly 10,000 registrations.

Twente region of the Netherlands to get its own domain

The comparison between Friesland and Twente is particularly relevant for industry analysts and local stakeholders. Both regions share similar demographic profiles, with Friesland’s population closely mirroring the 600,000-plus residents of Twente. Because Friesland has demonstrated that a regional TLD can sustain a healthy level of interest—maintaining 10,000 registrations even after a transition in management—the expectations for .twente are grounded in realistic market data. The similar population sizes suggest that Twente has the necessary critical mass to support a vibrant and self-sustaining digital ecosystem under its own name.
