Slovenia’s .si Domain Experiences Unprecedented Surge Following "Super Intelligence" Executive Order

46k .si domains registered in September, momentum growing after Trump’s executive order

Speculative Investment Versus Actual Adoption

Despite the massive numbers reported by the Slovenian registry, a significant gap remains between investor speculation and corporate adoption. In the world of domain names, high registration numbers do not always equate to a thriving ecosystem of websites. Currently, the vast majority of .si registrations appear to be speculative "flips" rather than foundations for new businesses.

Industry analysts and trackers have noted that the bulk of aftermarket transactions for .si domains involve investors selling to other investors. Many of these domains are being immediately relisted on secondary marketplaces at significantly higher prices, often reaching thousands of dollars for premium keywords paired with the .si suffix. This cycle of speculative trading is common in the early stages of a domain trend, but it carries inherent risks if the anticipated end-user demand fails to materialize.

Evidence of this "adoption gap" can be found in the latest data from ProductHunt, a primary platform for tracking new software and startup launches. Leanne Mac, an industry expert who monitors the TLDs used by emerging startups, reported that there have been no startups launching with a .si domain over the past 30 days. In stark contrast, the .ai extension remains the preferred choice for the tech community. On a single day during this period, 50 different startups launched using .ai domains, while the .si extension saw zero representation among new launches.

This discrepancy highlights a critical challenge for the .si extension: while investors are convinced of its future value, the developers and entrepreneurs who actually build on these domains have yet to make the switch. For .si to truly rival .ai, it will need to move beyond the portfolios of speculators and into the address bars of legitimate tech companies.

The Economic Advantage of the .si Extension

One factor that could eventually drive end-user adoption is the significant price difference between .si and its competitors. The Slovenian registry, Arnes, maintains a relatively low wholesale price for .si registrations, currently charging approximately €10 per year. There are also fewer restrictive barriers to entry, making it an accessible option for those looking to secure a short, memorable domain.
