Overe Appoints Former Sophos CSO Simon Reed as Strategic Advisor to Accelerate MSP Security Growth

A Challenging Environment

Simon Reed’s transition from the executive suite of a global leader like Sophos to an advisory role at Overe is reflective of a broader shift in how the industry views the SMB threat landscape. In discussions regarding his new role, Reed highlighted that the current environment is one of the most challenging periods in history for both MSPs and the small enterprises they protect.

One of the primary issues Reed identified is the death of the "set it and forget it" era of cybersecurity. In the early 2000s, security was often viewed as a commodity—a piece of software installed on a desktop that would run in the background, update itself, and provide a binary "protected" status. In the modern era of cloud-based work and sophisticated social engineering, that model is no longer viable.

"It used to be that cybersecurity was an install and forget capability," Reed observed. "The product updated itself and kept you protected. That’s not the case these days; you need continued expertise in partnership with a decent product and capability."

This shift has placed an immense burden on MSPs. As small businesses realize they cannot manage their own security, they naturally turn to their IT service providers. However, many MSPs are themselves struggling with the sheer volume and complexity of the threats facing their clients. From the rise of sophisticated ransomware-as-a-service to the recent explosion of generative AI-driven phishing attacks, the technical requirements for staying safe are constantly shifting.

Reed pointed out that for a small company, the MSP is essentially the sole source of cybersecurity expertise. Therefore, the "crucial link" in the modern security chain is the partnership between the product being used and the MSP’s ability to manage it effectively. If the product is too complex for the MSP to deploy at scale across dozens or hundreds of clients, the security of those clients inevitably suffers.

The advent of generative AI has only added fuel to the fire. While AI offers defensive benefits, it has also lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals, allowing them to create highly convincing, localized, and frequent attacks. This puts "huge pressure" on end-users and the MSPs tasked with defending them, making the need for specialized, automated support tools more urgent than ever.

Prioritizing Cyber Resilience Over Simple Defense

The core philosophy that drew Reed to Overe is a focus on "resilience" rather than just traditional "defense." While the two terms are often used interchangeably, in a professional cybersecurity context, they represent different approaches to risk management.
