Anthropic and Akamai Ink Landmark $11.6 Billion Compute Partnership to Fuel Long-Term AI Infrastructure Growth

In a move that underscores the staggering capital requirements of the generative artificial intelligence era, Akamai Technologies and AI safety and research company Anthropic have announced a massive extension of their existing partnership. The centerpiece of the agreement is a commitment from Anthropic to spend $11.6 billion on compute services over the next seven years, a deal that significantly elevates Akamai’s standing as a critical infrastructure provider for the world’s most advanced AI models.

The multi-year commitment is designed to leverage Akamai’s highly distributed cloud and edge infrastructure to support Anthropic’s rapidly scaling operations. According to Akamai, the partnership is specifically tailored to meet "accelerating CPU workload demands," highlighting a critical but often overlooked component of the AI hardware stack. While much of the industry’s attention remains fixed on the scarcity of high-end graphics processing units (GPUs), the orchestration, data processing, and delivery of AI services at scale require a robust foundation of traditional compute power distributed globally.

For Akamai, a company that built its reputation as the world’s leading content delivery network (CDN) before pivoting aggressively into cloud computing and security, the deal represents a massive validation of its "Connected Cloud" strategy. By securing one of the most high-profile AI developers as a long-term anchor tenant, Akamai is positioning itself as a viable alternative to the "hyperscaler" trio of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

"Anthropic is advancing the AI revolution, and we are thrilled they chose Akamai’s capabilities for building and operating AI infrastructure at scale," said Akamai co-founder and CEO Tom Leighton in a statement accompanying the announcement. Leighton emphasized that the company’s heritage in enterprise service is a key differentiator in the crowded infrastructure market. "Our expanding global footprint, combined with our years of experience serving the world’s largest enterprises, positions us to be the infrastructure provider for secure and responsible AI applications and workloads."

The announcement is not an isolated event but rather a significant expansion of a relationship established earlier this year. Akamai noted that the new agreement builds upon a previous deal that already included more than $2.8 billion in Cloud Infrastructure Services (CIS) commitments. This latest $11.6 billion figure represents a nearly fourfold increase in the scale of the partnership, reflecting the breakneck pace at which Anthropic’s infrastructure needs are evolving as it iterates on its Claude family of models.

The financial structure of the deal also suggests a deep, strategic alignment between the two firms that goes beyond a standard vendor-customer relationship. As part of the agreement, Akamai has issued a warrant to Anthropic for the purchase of non-voting convertible Series B stock. This equity component aligns the long-term interests of both companies, effectively giving Anthropic a stake in the infrastructure provider it relies upon, while providing Akamai with a committed, high-growth partner for the better part of a decade.
