Identity Digital Secures U.S. Government Contract to Manage .us Domain Registry

Akram Atallah, CEO of Identity Digital, echoed this sentiment in his official statement following the win. Atallah emphasized the company’s commitment to strengthening multistakeholder governance and bringing innovation to the .us space.

"We are pleased the U.S. government selected Identity Digital to help run .us," Atallah said. "We committed to strengthening multistakeholder governance and bringing innovation to .us, and this selection affirms the strength of our registry services business. Registry operators around the world rely on our platform, and we now bring those services to .us."

Atallah further noted that the company’s immediate priority is ensuring a "smooth handoff." Registry migrations are notoriously complex technical undertakings, involving the transfer of millions of DNS records and the synchronization of data with thousands of independent registrars worldwide. Identity Digital will be working in close coordination with the NTIA and its channel partners to ensure that the transition is invisible to the end-users who rely on .us domains for their websites and email services.

Contract Terms and Future Outlook

The financial structure of the contract follows the established model for domain registries. The U.S. government does not pay Identity Digital a direct fee for its services. Instead, Identity Digital is granted the right to collect annual fees from registrars for every .us domain name that is registered or renewed. This "per-name" fee model incentivizes the registry to grow the extension while maintaining a stable environment that encourages renewals.

The initial term of the contract is 36 months, which includes a transition period of up to nine months. During this window, Identity Digital will build out the specific infrastructure required for .us and begin the process of migrating data from GoDaddy’s systems. If the transition and subsequent management meet the government’s performance standards, the contract includes option periods that could extend Identity Digital’s tenure to a total of seven years.

While the current wholesale price is known to be around $6.50, the NTIA has indicated that further details regarding future wholesale pricing and specific contractual obligations will be released at a later date. Industry observers will be watching closely to see if Identity Digital introduces new pricing tiers or promotional structures to reinvigorate growth in the .us extension, which has faced stiff competition from .com and newer generic extensions in recent years.

As the transition begins, the focus remains on the stability of the American digital namespace. With a new steward at the helm, the .us domain is poised for a period of modernization aimed at reclaiming its status as a premier destination for American businesses and citizens online.
