Former Sophos Chief Security Officer Simon Reed Joins Overe to Strengthen MSP Cybersecurity Strategy

This accessibility gap creates a significant risk profile. As the threat landscape becomes more perilous, the combination of high capital costs and a shortage of skilled personnel places smaller organizations at a disadvantage. Overe’s mission is to lower these barriers, providing a platform that is specifically tailored to the operational realities of the MSP—focusing on ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and deep integration with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem that serves as the backbone for most small businesses.

A challenging environment

The timing of Simon Reed’s appointment coincides with what many experts describe as a "sea change" in the nature of cyber threats. Speaking on his new role, Reed emphasized that the industry has moved past the era where security could be treated as a static utility. In the past, a business could install an antivirus solution, ensure it was set to auto-update, and feel reasonably confident in its protection. Today, that "install and forget" capability is a relic of a simpler time.

Modern cybersecurity, according to Reed, requires a continuous partnership between a robust product and human expertise. This is particularly true for smaller companies that do not have the luxury of an in-house Security Operations Center (SOC). These businesses look to their MSPs not just for hardware and software, but for the actual "cybersecurity expertise" required to navigate a world of ransomware, business email compromise (BEC), and sophisticated phishing.

The emergence of generative AI has further complicated this dynamic. AI-driven tools are allowing threat actors to automate the creation of highly convincing phishing campaigns and develop malware that can adapt to traditional signature-based defenses. For an MSP, keeping pace with these developments while managing dozens or hundreds of different client environments is an immense challenge. Reed believes that the most crucial link in the modern security chain is the partnership between the product vendor and the MSP, ensuring that the technology augments the MSP’s capabilities rather than adding to their administrative burden.

It is this specific focus on the MSP-client relationship that drew Reed to Overe. He noted that the industry is shifting its focus from pure "defense"—the act of trying to block every possible intrusion—to "resilience." Cyber resilience acknowledges that while defenses are necessary, they are rarely perfect. A resilient organization is one that has its digital estate properly configured, its tools correctly deployed, and a clear understanding of its coverage gaps.

Reed’s philosophy on resilience centers on the fundamentals of IT hygiene and proactive management. He argues that many successful attacks are not the result of a failure in defensive technology, but rather a failure in how that technology was configured or maintained. For an MSP, ensuring that every client’s Microsoft 365 tenant is hardened against common attack vectors is a monumental task when done manually. Overe aims to automate this resilience, providing the visibility needed to answer critical questions: Is the estate configured correctly? Is the toolset actually active? Is there coverage in the places where the business believes it has coverage?
