Apple and LG’s Upcoming Smart Home Accessories to Feature Exclusive Dynamic Island Proximity Controls

As Apple prepares for its highly anticipated "Welcome home" special event scheduled for next week, new details are emerging regarding the company’s ambitious expansion into the smart home hardware market. While Apple has long maintained a presence in the living room through the Apple TV and HomePod, recent leaks suggest a significant strategic shift toward co-developed hardware. Central to this new push is a partnership with LG to produce a suite of "second-party" accessories that will reportedly feature deep integration with the iPhone’s interface, specifically through a new feature dubbed "Proximity Control."

The existence of these accessories was first brought to light earlier this week, with reports indicating that Apple is working closely with LG to develop a range of essential smart home devices, including thermostats, smart locks, and security cameras. However, the latest technical leaks provide a clearer picture of how Apple intends to differentiate these products from the vast sea of existing HomeKit-compatible devices. By leveraging the Dynamic Island and specialized communication protocols, Apple appears to be aiming for a level of hardware-software synergy that has previously been reserved for its first-party devices like the HomePod and AirPods.

An exclusive new HomeKit feature

The discovery of this new functionality began with code string analysis by developer Aaron Perris, who identified references to a system where nearby smart home accessories could automatically surface controls within the Dynamic Island. This was followed by more specific details shared by the social media leaker known as @itspdfu, who outlined the mechanics of a feature called "Proximity Control."

Apple’s new ‘second-party’ HomeKit products will have this exclusive iPhone feature

According to these findings, Proximity Control is designed to make interacting with home hardware as frictionless as possible. When a user brings their iPhone near one of the new LG-manufactured accessories, a notification will expand from the Dynamic Island at the top of the screen. This interaction is contextual; for instance, approaching a smart thermostat might trigger an "Open Controls" button that allows for immediate temperature adjustments without the user needing to manually unlock their phone, find the Home app, and navigate to the specific room.

The integration appears even more robust for security-focused hardware. For devices such as indoor and outdoor security cameras or video doorbells, the Dynamic Island will reportedly offer a "camera viewer" shortcut. This would allow users to get a quick glance at a live feed or recent activity simply by being in physical proximity to the device or a designated control point. This shift toward proximity-based UI reflects Apple’s broader design philosophy of "intent," where the physical location and movement of the user serve as a signal for what digital tools should be presented.
