Schlage Set to Launch Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt with Ultra Wideband Support for Apple Home Users

The landscape of the smart home security market is poised for a significant shift as Schlage, a long-standing leader in residential and commercial door hardware, prepares for the official release of its most advanced residential locking system to date. Following its initial unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early 2025, the company has officially confirmed that the Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt will be available for purchase starting June 29. This new flagship device represents a major technological leap for the brand, introducing Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to its lineup and offering a level of precision in entry management that was previously unattainable through standard wireless protocols.

The Sense Pro arrives as a highly anticipated addition to the Apple Home ecosystem. While Schlage has supported Apple’s HomeKit platform for years, the Sense Pro is only the second smart lock on the market to fully leverage the spatial awareness capabilities of Ultra Wideband technology. This integration is designed to address one of the most persistent pain points in the smart home industry: the "hands-free" entry experience. By utilizing the UWB chips found in modern iPhones and Apple Watches, the Sense Pro aims to provide a seamless transition from the sidewalk to the sofa without the user ever needing to reach for a physical key or even tap a digital interface.

The Evolution of Hands-Free Entry: From Bluetooth to Ultra Wideband

To understand the significance of the Schlage Sense Pro, one must look at the history of proximity-based locking. For years, manufacturers attempted to offer "auto-unlock" features using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and geofencing. These systems relied on a combination of GPS data to determine when a user was nearing their home and a Bluetooth handshake to trigger the deadbolt once the user was within range of the door.

However, these legacy systems were often plagued by reliability issues and security concerns. Bluetooth signals can be inconsistent, sometimes failing to trigger until a user has been standing at the door for several seconds, or worse, triggering prematurely while the user is still in the driveway or a different part of the house. Geofencing, which relies on cellular and GPS data, is often too imprecise to distinguish between someone arriving at the front door and someone simply driving past the house.

Ultra Wideband changes this dynamic entirely. Unlike Bluetooth, which measures signal strength to estimate distance, UWB uses "Time of Flight" (ToF) calculations to measure the exact time it takes for radio pulses to travel between devices. This allows the Schlage Sense Pro to locate a user’s iPhone or Apple Watch with centimeter-level accuracy. The result is a locking mechanism that knows exactly where the user is in relation to the door, providing a level of spatial awareness that makes accidental unlocks a thing of the past.

Schlage Converge: Intelligence Beyond Proximity

Central to the Sense Pro’s functionality is a new proprietary technology Schlage has dubbed "Converge." According to the company’s recent announcement, Schlage Converge is not merely a proximity sensor; it is an intelligent system that analyzes the user’s "intent to enter." By calculating the speed, trajectory, and motion of the resident as they approach the entryway, the deadbolt can distinguish between someone walking toward the door to enter and someone simply walking past the door to check the mail or work in the garden.
