The Future of Hardware
The true potential of Muse was unveiled at the Connect 2026 conference, where Meta announced that the AI agent would be integrated into its Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. This move is intended to leverage the glasses’ cameras and microphones to provide the AI with a real-time video feed of the user’s life, allowing it to offer context-aware assistance.
However, recognizing the public’s growing discomfort with "pervert glasses"—the derogatory term for camera-equipped eyewear that has sparked privacy concerns—Meta also unveiled the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses. This model retains the high-quality speakers, microphones, and touch controls of the original but omits the camera entirely.
This combination of comfortable, socially acceptable hardware and a powerful, proactive AI agent represents the "killer app" for the next generation of technology. It is a vision of AI that is hands-free, always-on, and genuinely helpful.
The Glaring Problem of Trust
Despite the technical achievement and the clarity of Meta’s vision, there remains one insurmountable obstacle: Meta has not earned the trust required to operate a product this intimate.
The company’s history is a map of ethical lapses. From the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the data of 87 million users was harvested without consent, to internal research showing that Instagram had a toxic effect on the mental health of teenage girls, Meta has consistently prioritized growth over user safety. The company has been accused of allowing its platforms to be used for the radicalization of users and has repeatedly misled both regulators and the public regarding its privacy practices.
To use Muse as intended, a user must grant Meta access to their email inboxes, their calendars, and even their bank accounts. Given the company’s track record, handing over the "keys to the kingdom" is a risk that many may find unacceptable. The Jolly avatar, while seemingly harmless, acts as a digital front for a corporation that has historically viewed user data as a commodity to be exploited.
Meta has successfully identified the winning strategy for the future of AI. It has built the right features and the right hardware to lead the next technological epoch. However, as long as the company’s legacy of privacy violations and ethical failures looms over its products, even the most visionary AI may struggle to find a home in the lives of cautious consumers. Meta has the vision, but it still lacks the character to match it.
